Approximately fifty automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.

Vehicles, walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.

Police say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.

The substance had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they added.

Officers then located many other smeared automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials state preliminary tests suggest the substance was probably human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; investigators are not yet informed of any injuries in relation with the incident," they stated.

Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for details.

A senior political figure stated the incident made him stunned and required to be addressed quickly.

"This event affects the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on online, recalling the death of nine individuals by a gunman targeting residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
