RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey commented. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
