The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
