The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Democrats need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
